Last time we discussed some of the pitfalls in changing your first name, now we’ll talk about changing your surname.
There are two types of influence: internal; and external. Internal influences are where we change the name ourselves, from our own desire, and not due to an outside pressure. External influences are those pressures from society, like laws, and cultural conventions. A good example of external influence is the expectation of a woman to change her surname to her partner’s surname due to marriage, or that of changing it to that of adoptive parents, or a step-father’s surname.
The last name, family name, or surname, numerologically influences us by imposing pressures over the other names. It has a less powerful force than the more often used common, familiar names, but it is not an inconsequential flavouring. Rather than tell us how we will behave consciously and actively, like our first names do, the surname “pushes” us to act in a certain fashion, it tends to modify our behaviour (and thus is not always successful) rather than dictate it. Having no surname at all can give us a great freeing influence; good examples are pop-stars like Sting, Cher, and Madonna.
Here’s the Level table and Meanings list so you can work your own name out.

Let us look at an example: Suppose Mary Smith is about to marry Dennis Jones, she wonders if the new surname is one she should adopt willingly. Interpreting the surname SMITH we get: S = 19th letter, which is a 3rd level I might number; it means leader and carer; this adds to 1 indicating controller. The phrase is: "I might lead using compassion with control." M = 13th letter, 2nd level I can number; it means leader and communicator; it adds to 4 indicating originator. The phrase is: "I can be original by speaking with leadership." I = 9th letter, 1st level I will number; it means carer. The phrase is: "I will care". T = 20th letter, 3rd level I might number; it means sharer and the "0", which we have not come across before, means generically or all, start over again. The phrase is: "I might share everything." H = 8th letter, 1st level I will letter; it means builder. The phrase is: "I will take action." Therefore the name SMITH=14928 adding to 24 as the first number is larger than one digit we have to add it together a second time thus it is known as a secondary 6; the phrases I can and worker are applied and become "I can do it!"
Summing up the phrases "I might lead using compassion with control", "I can be original by speaking with leadership", "I will care", "I might share everything", and "I will take action" combining with the theme of "I can do it!" we can see a set of modifying behaviour controls.
The new surname is JONES (10, 15, 14, 5, 19=16551=18=9) which becomes: "I can lead", "I can work by leading through changes", "I can adapt by controlling with security", "I will change", and "I might control by improvement", combining with "I can care!" This is a very different set of modifiers and could enhance or detract from the purpose of this person. Note that it is only a modifier; it does not change the nature of the person unless they use the name as their common name. As her first name MARY (13, 1, 18, 25=4197=21=3) is "I can protect using creative leadership", "I will control", "I can set ideals by leading and organisation", and "I might question why others make changes", combined with "I can communicate."
SMITH supports MARY well, and JONES, though different, is not a bad change to make as it brings out the nurturer rather than the boss – if that is what she desires.
This series of articles has been a glimpse into the more complex and technical side of numerology. The methods I have presented, although wonderful tools for the analyst and student of human behaviour are not necessary to find out who you or someone else are: most of us can use much simpler forms and calculations.
My next article starts a new series of a much less complex system. We will deal with Dates Of Birth and we’ll look at a fairly simple method of assessing character.
