Welcome to another insight into how names are affected by numbers. So far we have covered how to recognise the effect on ourselves, and how to decode a name into Vowel, Consonant and Name Numbers. This issue explores the method and pitfalls in name changes. First we will discuss the terms "Number Level" and "Pattern-Flow".

The term "Number Level" is almost self-explanatory, if a letter is located on the first row of the table above, then its value is a Primary Level (P), all those on the next level are Secondary Level (S), and the last row are Tertiary Level (T). These are written in the following manner, called the "Pattern-Flow" e.g. MAT = 4S 1P 2T or GLADYS = 7P 3S 1P 4P 7T 1T.
The effect of a Primary is slightly different to the effect of a Secondary, and this differs again to the Tertiary. Thus a name with P Letters indicates a strong minded "Pioneer" type. The name with S Letters is more cautious, being a "Settler" type. The name with T Letters has a weaker pioneering spirit, but is a stronger "Boss" type. Think of the P as the "Verb" in a sentence: it is the doing level. The S is the "Adverb" or "Adjective": it describes the action or attitude. The T is the "Noun": it tells us what we are. This applies to all letters, in all combinations, and is important when considering a name for a business, a child, or for a name change.
Why change your name? After all where’s the harm in a name? It is not only a name, a name defines who we are in society. If you were a young girl and your first name was "Roger", it is most probable that your school life would be harsh. We have all heard ‘funny’ surnames; perhaps we have laughed at Littlebottom, snickered at Smelley, or smiled knowingly when we see the newly married couple calling themselves Smith in a motel register. Therefore names have power; they define who we are socially.
Another, more numerological reason to change a name may be a desire to alter the effect of the name’s Number. Perhaps your name reverberates to the influence of a 3 (communicator, childlike, fun, creative), and you wish to have a 7 energy (teacher, challenger, critic, wise, knowledgeable). This is reasonable, and you may not have to change the sound of the name, just the spelling.
In the first issue of Spheres we looked at the name SUZIE. She wanted to use her skills in art to start a business. With low self-confidence and a lack of public recognition, she thought a name change would cause an alteration in her public reception. I pointed out that, although there were many variations of her name to try, her current name is better than any other. I also advised that the name SUSANNE was the best alternative if she insisted on a change. A complete name change can be very disruptive, and takes between 6 months and 5 years to adapt to. As Suzie wants an almost immediate adjustment the delay indicated by a drastic change is unsuitable.
Why? To see why, we need to examine the interplay of the pattern-flow in her name.

V - 3T 9P5P = 17 = 1 + 7 = 8 N - S U Z I E = 26 = 2 + 6 = 8 C - 1T 8T = 9 = 9 |
Her Consonants rate as 9 (improver, humanist, ideals, dreams, goals), her Vowels and Name rate as 8 (designer, action, organised, builder, doer); all very good for an artist in the public eye. The pattern-flow looks at the levels of those numbers: 1T 3T 8T 9P 5P. With three Ts leading two Ps we can see a strong and cautious leader, using creativity and design from experience, with fresh innovation and quick adaptation.
The name SUSANNE has the pattern-flow of 1T 3T 1T 1P 5S 5S 5P. It shows the same strong and cautious leader, with experience in creativity, but it alters the perception of design or organization to strengthen the authority angle combined with a pioneering drive. The other numbers, all 5s, regulate the need for change down to the ability to adapt. The Vowels add to 9 (improver, humanist, ideals, dreams, goals), the Consonants and Name add to 3 (communicator, childlike, fun, creative), which has a smaller impact than her original name.
Business names are easier to work with as there are many variations that can be used. Think of all the shortcut words seen in advertising. EZY, EZEE, 4 SALE, THIS ‘R’ US, etc. The difference between business names and personal names is shown in the effect on public perception. The business is perceived as the total name and the personality of the owners is not reflected. A persons name is worked out from what the person calls himself, not the total name he was born with.
In the next issue we will continue exploring the effects of changing names, focussing on the meanings of each of the three levels.
